‘Solar News You Can Use:’ Filtering out the noise, finding the information we need

by Liam Davidson

It’s not a groundbreaking observation to note how hard it is to stay apprised of the information we need these days. With limited time-- and any number of morning newsletters, push notifications, and news feeds vying for our attention—where do you turn to find the information you need about developments in the industry?

To answer that question, I turned to members of the Sunwealth team to fill me in on their go-to sources that cover clean energy and solar markets.

Based in New York City, Canary is an independent, non-profit newsroom dedicated to chronicling the transition to a clean energy future. Given its particular focus, Canary is a leader in news analysis covering the primary energy, transportation, industrial and building sectors.

Many members of our team like to start their day by visiting the Bloomberg Green homepage. Their network of business journalists across the world can provide valuable insights into the global trends driving—and often hampering—the transition to a zero-carbon economy.

The team at PV Magazine provides something immensely useful—deep, well-placed insights into the solar industry across the globe. Want to know the developers shortlisted for a big installment in Saudi Arabia? Interested in a company turning leftover battery waste into sustainable fertilizer? On all these subjects and more, PV Magazine has you covered.

Politico’s Morning Energy newsletter is my first stop for news affecting the domestic energy sector. Hitting my inbox by 10:20 a.m. each morning, Matthew Choi’s preview of the most important stories I should know is a good way to stay on top-of-the policy and regulatory developments I’m keeping an eye on.

  • Utility Dive

Looking for the latest news affecting the utility industry? Interested in the way a certain proposed FERC regulation might affect energy transmission? Utility Dive is a one-stop shop for news that’s affecting the utility and transmission sectors.

  • Currents by Norton Rose Fulbright

Hosted by the team over at Norton Rose Fulbright and its partner, Todd Alexander, the podcast Currents dives deep into the intricacies of project financing and investigates the trends driving new developments in energy and infrastructure.

  • The Energy Gang by Wood MacKenzie (formerly of GTM)

A weekly podcast, The Energy Gang covers a wide range of issues affecting energy, cleantech, and the environment. It’s a must-listen for those of us interested in hashing out what a clean energy future might look like.

  • Solar for All by Third Sun Solar

A new entrant to the podcasting scene, Solar for All—hosted by industry expert Geoff Greenfield—offers fascinating conversations rooted in the intersection of the clean energy economy and climate justice. Solar for All is the perfect companion for your morning commute.

Is there a newsletter, podcast, or website that we’re missing? Something that you can’t make it through your day without? Let us know! We’ll continue to update this list with your suggestions.
