Department of Energy Recognizes Sunwealth as a National Model for Community Solar

By partnering with pillar institutions in our communities and intentionally focusing on increasing access to clean energy, Sunwealth has become a national model for community solar.

At the National Community Solar Partnership’s Annual Summit, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recognized three of Sunwealth’s projects as finalists for their 2022 Sunny Awards for Equitable Community Solar. Our projects were among only 50 other submissions identified as models for best practices in developing truly equitable community solar projects. Additionally, our low-income community shared solar project with Boston Properties received special recognition from the DOE for generating meaningful household savings for our subscribers.

Projects submitted for Sunny Awards consideration included:

Boston Properties CityPoint at Totten Pond

Waltham, Massachusetts

Developed in partnership with Boston Properties (BxP), our 614 kW solar project on the roof of their garage at City Point – a mixed-used office park in Waltham, MA – not only provides discounted energy to BxP, but it also provides discounted electricity to low-to-moderate income households and nonprofits across 15 Boston neighborhoods.

New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)

New York, New York

Developed in partnership with Co-Op Power, Accord Power, Bright Power, and SolPurpose, our solar portfolio of 67 projects on the roofs of NYCHA buildings total 3 MW of clean energy capacity that delivers energy savings to NYCHA residents and LMI households across New York City. The portfolio also provided full-time employment for over a dozen NYCHA residents through an innovative solar apprenticeship program. After the 6-12 month apprenticeship, close to 40% of participants accepted full-time job offers.

National Blue Army Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima

Franklin Township, New Jersey

Developed in partnership with Citrine Power and installed by Pfister Energy, our 682 kW solar parking lot canopy at the National Blue Army Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima was one of the first projects approved under New Jersey’s Community Solar Pilot Program. It will provide discounted electricity to low-to-moderate income residents of Warren, Sussex, Morris, and Hunterdon counties.
