Themes of Inclusion and Climate Justice Drive Impact Investing
SOCAP Global recently shared a list of the Top 25 conversations, ideas, lessons, and challenges raised in conversations across the SOCAP community in 2021. Intersectional themes of racial and social justice, economic inclusion and climate action rose to the forefront, and investors answered the call:
2020 and 2021 brought surges in impact investing and interest in the impact economy. We saw an acceleration and amplification of many of the challenges facing our society, which led to a push for more purposeful investments, primarily driven by younger generations and women. The past two years have also forced many of us to slow down in our personal lives, providing a moment to reflect, reimagine, and redesign what a just and inclusive future looks like.
Among the featured conversations was Sunwealth CFO Omar Blayton’s panel on “Financing Climate Justice.” Omar joined Doug Sims, Senior Director, Resilient Communities Division, People & Communities Program at Natural Resources Defense Council; Kerry O’Neill, CEO at Inclusive Prosperity Capital; and Cathie Mahon, President & CEO at Inclusiv for a conversation about how to dramatically increase the scale of capital focused on clean energy and energy efficiency for low- and moderate-income communities and communities of color; and the potential of solar deployment with an explicit focus on social equity.
